After all this time I finally got to the front yard. Now that all the link blocks and gardens have been started, I can lay some reasonable turf. The first step is to prepare the surface underneath by adding some top soil. As you can see from the image below, the soil is added and left about 2cm below the path height.

The grass chosen was Sir Walter. I had previously used Winter Green about 10 years ago, and when you keep the water up to it, it is fine, however, if you do not, it seems to thin out and the weeds come thick and fast. Therefore I think I will stick with Sir Walter, which is a coarse leafed grass.

The grass did not come in rolls, it comes in flat slabs around 1200mm by 600mm.

At least I do not seem to be too alergic to this grass.

It certainly makes a difference to the front yard now having grass and not weeds and dirt.

The following images were taken 3 months after laying the turf.

Most of the knitting has happened now between each slab of turf.

A light layer of top soil may be used to fill in the small gaps and holes, but generally speaking this Sir Walter turf is a very strong healthy grass.
